Alberta Class 1 Learning Pathway: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Confirm Eligibility
Before you begin, ensure you meet the following requirements:
At least 18 years old
Hold a non-GDL Alberta Class 5 license
Medically fit to operate a commercial vehicle
Step 2: Tier 1 – Entry-Level Online Training
Complete online training covering commercial driving fundamentals and safety regulations (40 hours)
Enroll via the Alberta government portal (Alberta.ca), create and verify your account
Log in to the Driver Portal and select training
Cost: $250 (paid directly to the Government of Alberta)
Step 3: Tier 2 – Core Learning Program
Hands-On Training:
Complete the Air Brake (Q) endorsement if not already certified
Contact Safety Buzz Campus to register for the driving portion
Participate in 60 hoursof in-yard and in-cab training focused on vehicle operation and safety procedures
Required to Begin Tier 2:
A copy of your driver’s license
Air Brake (Q) endorsement – if not on your license
A copy of your Class 1 knowledge test
$1,000 non-refundable deposit to secure your spot

After Completion:
Eligible to take the Class 1 road test (separate fee)
Passing the test grants you a restricted Class 1 license (operate commercial vehicles within Alberta only)
Visit any Alberta Registry Agent to obtain your license
Cost: $7,600
Step 4: Tier 3 – Competence Building Program (Optional)
17–25 hours of one-on-one training to enhance driving skills
Completion removes license restrictions, giving full Class 1 privileges across Canada and the U.S.
If you hold a Farm Restricted Class 1 P license for one year, step 4 will remove the restriction giving you an unrestricted Class 1.
Cost: $2,500

Road test fee: $217 (GST EXEMPT), booked by Safety Buzz Campus
